dumb type stands for the relation between the new media and the body like no other group of artists. Within this group that was founded in Kyoto, Japan in 1984 artists from different disciplines work together collectively. Both performers and audience travel to the boundaries of perception, between life and death, between inside and outside, between image and reality. The collective asks a question occupying many performers in East Asia: Is the body a projection surface of social, economic and political processes which leave their traces on every individual? Or is the the body the last point of resistance for archaically embedded identity in a culture?
