Retrospective of the work of Bhupen Khakhar

12October02 - 05January03

A Visiting Arts funded project. The first UK retrospective of work by Bhupen Khakhar, one of the leading figures in contemporary Indian painting who had exhibited extensively internationally but had never had a solo show in the UK. The exhibition featured oil paintings, watercolours and drawings by Khakhar alongside a selection of works by LS Lowry selected by the artist during his residency. An exhibition of Manchester-based artist Jahit Chuhan whose work has been influenced by Khakhar was run in parallel with the retrospective as part of the Lowrys programme to mark the Commonwealth Games. The project also included a residency for the artist which ran from 10-21 June and was a collaboration between The Lowry and the University of Salford.
