New Space

04July03 - 04July05

A Visiting Arts funded project. An exhibition featuring the work of contemporary Japanese artists curated by Reiko Aoyagi, a noted Japanese artist living in Wales, and Martin Barlow, Director of Oriel Mostyn. It reflected on a theme relevant to contemporary concerns over culture and identity in Japan and Wales. Although differing greatly in many respects, both peoples have strong senses of cultural identity based traditionally on territory and geography, landscape and nature. Both, however, are part of larger, globalising cultural trends which are forcing a re-evaluation of traditional perceptions and may provide new ways of thinking about and experiencing identity based on more personal notions of space. Shown at Oriel Mostyn, Llandudno, Conwy and Glynn Vivian Gallery, Swansea, Wales.
