ARTIST STATEMENT/ POSTCARD PROJECT OF THE HOUSE OF WORLD CULTURES 2007 ´Authenticity in art practice as defined by the possibility for real as opposed to simulated transformation of the self and of the world. The creation of interfaces which allow these possibilities to permeate society. The preservation, still, of the complex and rich areas of the personal, of individualized knowledge/skills and expressions. Political/social concerns need not to be reductive. Art as a process which actualizes these concerns and this relationship through a visual/sensory system akin to but distinct from the verbal. The struggle to materialize the ephemeral, to give it a body. Beauty as the integrity of this relationship. An aesthetic which by nature of its transparent structure and flow, its sensitivity to the shifting moment, its grammar, reveals the processes and intents of its making, by means of an inner mechanism. Truth as exposure as opposed to conclusion.´ Vasudha Thozhur, born in Mysore in 1956, studied at the College of Arts and Crafts, Chennai, and the Croydon School of Art & Design, U.K. She has had solo exhibitions of her paintings at Sakshi Gallery in Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai since 1987, and in 2001, at Art Inc., Delhi. Her group exhibitions include, in 2002: Transfiguration (Art Inc./India Habitat Centre, Delhi); Creative Space (Sakshi Gallery/India Habitat Centre, Delhi); in 1998: Terrain Vagues (École Regionale des Beaux Arts de Rouen and Kent Institute of Art and Design); National Museum, Nairobi. In 2002 the artist received a grant to research linking her art practice with social activism (in relationship to the Gujarat genocide of 2002). Vasudha Thozhur lives and works in Vadodara, India.
