Michael Svoboda was born on the Pacific Island Gaum, grew up in Chicago, studied the trumpet, composition and conducting then came to Germany. Here he began to work intensely with Karl Heinz Stockhausen, in whose opera cycle LIGHT he played Lucifer in person. Michael Svoboda has given more than 300 premières. Besides playing in concerts and festivals all over the world he has long been directly involved with composers like Sandeep Bhagwati, Sid Corbett, Peter Eötvös, Manuel Hidalgo, Toshio Hosokawa, Helmut Lachenmann, Christian Jost, Benedict Mason, Martin Smolka, Matthias Spahlinger, Yehuday Yannay and Frank Zappa. He plays in the Quartet Avance, in various jazz groups with for instance Michael Riessler and Michael Kiedaisch, and as a soloist with eminent orchestras like the Moscow Symphony Orchestra, the Bavarian, West German and Southwest German Radio Orchestras, the Ensemble Modern, the Schönberg Ensemble, KlangForum Wien and so on.
