Article

Javor Gardev works in the fields of contemporary theatre and contemporary performance art. His artistic search focuses on contemporary dramaturgy, as well as on interpreting classic dramaturgy with the means and aesthetic codes of contemporary pop-culture.
Javor Gardev falls into the young generation of theatre directors in Bulgaria, yet he has managed to produce a significant number of artworks of diverse disciplines, and has earned not only national, but also international acclaim.
Gardev´s works, even those with a deceptively simple and mundane set-up, invariably posess a multi-layered reflectiveness. He connects to the themes of fear, love and death, which he finds to be the ageless centre point of all major literature and dramaturgy. He is particularly attracted to texts which build on oversensitivity to these existential questions to develop extraordinary, alternative poetics.
His artistic language is unconventional and continuously innovative. One of his early and most memorable breaks from common theatre practices was staging the performance "Bastard" in 2001 in an underground wine cellar in Varna, Bulgaria. Even in actual theatre spaces, Gardev employs surprising media solutions and experiments with the set and the actors/audience composition .
Besides his prolific theatre work, Gardev has directed radio plays, created video and performance art projects, written his own plays and various texts on philosophy, arts and aesthetics, and in 2007 is about to direct a movie.
Javor Gardev is engaged in the project Black/North SEAS, initiated by Intercult, Stockholm, to direct an international site-specific co-production which will tour in cities on the Black Sea and the North Sea in 2008-2009. As an artistic research premise for this co-production, in 2007 Gardev carried out an artistic exploration trip: SEAS DATE in Istanbul with Swedish visual art duo Barbro Westling/Peter Johansson.
