ARTIST STATEMENT/ POSTCARD PROJECT OF THE HOUSE OF WORLD CULTURES 2007 ‘Education and knowledge are the main factors in my life. There are a lot of significances in my artistry. They are nature, love, self-defence, experience of childhood life, sex, Buddhism, logic, history, general truth, solar system, traducement, politics. At present, I am studying how globalization affects individual skills and personality. I intend to finish the project (2000) of collecting views and aspects of 100 people from various countries this year.’ (Po Po) The self-taught artist Po Po was born in 1957 in the Burmese district capital Pathein. Like other younger modern artists from Burma/ Myanmar, he is trying to get round state repression and censorship in an experimental and interactive way. It is all the more surprising that Po Po’s works are notably playful, impulsive, ironic and sociable, humorously presenting regional and religious identities. Nonetheless some of his works are provocative and shocking like the open mass-grave in the computer-installation ‘Scream of the Dead’, which he refuses to talk about. This installation, which arose in 2003/05 in collaboration with the composer and songwriter Mynt Moe Aung and Soe Naing, was replicated many times as a CD-book on location and passed on from hand to hand. ‘Scream of the Dead’ is said by the artist to be a metaphor: ‘In 1987 and 1997, I held two shows in Yangon together with Myint Moe Aung, a sound-artist. In early 2003, we decided to work together once more, this time on a poetry book, and asked another visual artist, Soe Naing, to join us. At that time, Soe Naing was making a lot of clay sculptures, so we used images of them in our book, which is now being handed round as a CD in our art community. Called "Scream of the Dead", it may help others to understand what is happening to us in Myanmar as well as in other communities. It is a metaphor for life in Myanmar and the world today.’ Since 1987 Po Po has held many solo exhibitions like ‘Untitled’, ‘Solid Concepts’, ‘Wild Eye’, ‘Gangaw’ and ‘Htanoung Shadow’. His work has been shown at the Yokohama Triennial, Fukuoka/ Japan, the Gwangju Biennial, Gwangju/ South Korea and in the House of World Cultures, Berlin.
