Statement of the artist for the «Postcard Project» of the House of World Cultures “Respect for others and for nature – and thus for nature. If there is respect for others – for men and women equally – there is education for everyone, and everyone’s education is a boon for everyone else. Respect implies that nature’s riches are to be shared, supplying everyone with water and bread. Respect is opposed to all great inequalities and injustice. Given respect for others, there is no war.” Souleyman Badolo, 2007 In his work as a dancer, choreographer and teacher of dancing, Souleymane Badolo reflects his cultural awareness as an African artist in a world increasingly becoming a community. His dance idiom, with its narrative structure and mythological leanings, is firmly rooted in traditional African dancing. Through an up-to-date dance technique and his own forms of movement and composition, Badolo has been able to revitalize African dancing as a means of expression and thus to open the tradition to viewers all round the world. In his dances he comes to terms with repressed phases of African history like slavery and abduction, imprisonment, trauma, humiliation and despair but also with freedom, movement and human progress, which his intense dancing and acrobatic technique embody in tangible forms.
Badolos’ career in dancing began at DAMA (Direction des Arts et des Métiers de l’Arts). As a dancer and choreograph, he has worked throughout Europe and developed his personal style through engagements with Elsa Wolliatson, Mathilde Monnier, the Compagnie Salia Ni Seydou and at the Ballet National under Iréne Tassembedo.

In 1993, together with Lacina Coulibaly and Ousseni Sako, he founded the company Kongo Ba Teria in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso. Owing to its way of working, which integrates and combines tradition and modernity, the company is now reputed to be one of the centres of contemporary dancing on the African continent. Since 1996 it has been presenting its works on stages throughout Africa, as in Senegal, the Ivory Coast, Benin and the Cameroons. Since 2000 it has also appeared in Europe, as in France, Italy, Denmark, Spain, Belgium and Germany.

For performing ‘Vin Nem’ the company Kongo Ba Teria won the SANGA 2001 at the renowned African dance festival ‘Rencontres Chorégraphiques de l’Afrique et de l’Océan Indien/Choreographic Meetings of Africa and the Indian Ocean’.
