Korean life conditions

Female installation artist, Sora Kim, is among Korea´s avantgarde artists.
Korean is cool in Tokyo´s galleries and museums now, and Kim Sora, 37, is one of the artists in a show looking at the new diverse work of young Korean contemporary artists.

Artist Sora Kim made an installation of an art party. She installed the red, pink, and patterned brown carpet strips, threw in muted-tone pillows, co-ordinated the Felix Gonzalez-Torres-esque cascade of Crunkies, and, should you get thirsty, installed a Coke machine (though it´s not free).

Kim, who built an igloo out of electrical appliances in last year´s "My Home is Yours, Your Home is Mine" show at Tokyo Opera City Gallery, deals with concepts of gift-giving and forced social interaction between otherwise strangers (concepts also employed by Thai artist Rirkrit Tiravanija).

Sora Kim works in an exhibition directly with the matter of ´value´. Based on the values of a capitalist society centred on capital, labour and technology. We can see her works as a single unit with a shared idea, but under different names against the background of ´markets´. Kim attempts to unsettle the value system, which dominates our everyday life.

Her work intrinsically denies any fixed forms and floats like clouds. Like the natural cycle of water evaporated from the earth, condensed to cloud form in the air and then falling again on the earth as rain, her work is made in a cycle between her art and society.

Sora Kim is the creator of an imaginary company - The Unlimited Concept Co. The Cleaning Department, one of a number of imaginary departments, has occupied much of her time and artistic output over the past several years.

For the Mattress Factory, she designed a drink for janitors that create weightlessness. The installation consists of cases of the product in a futuristic retail shop environment.
