Literature with no boundries
Yuri Andrukhovych is a novelist, essayist and a poet - one of the leading Ukrainian prose writers of today. He is a postmodernist author, who has radically renewed Ukrainian poetry. Andrukhovych is also famous from his participation in the Orange Revolution and, quite surprisingly, as one of the most famous? football fan of the region.
?To be a writer means trying to write well? claims Yuri Andrukhovych. He travels a lot because he has to experience something before writing about it. But his journeys have another aim as well. He has been trying to convince partners from the West that Ukraine has its own independent culture and civilization. This is why Ukraine should be equal Europe?s partner in the field of culture.
?My fantasies, honored European parliamentarians, have no boundaries?- said Yuri Andrukhovych during his speech to the European Parliament on 15 December 2004 in Strasbourg. - ?I have a thousand projects for cultural partnership and a thousand friends throughout all of Europe, with whom we can realize these projects. We will make--I expect, with your help--countless steps toward mutual rapprochement, to denounce that ´quarantine line´ that divides one Europe from the other. My Europe--that is the title of Andrzej Stasiuk´s and my joint poetographic book. In conclusion allow me one more poetographic metaphor. It floats out right away when you look over geographic maps. The maps all demonstrate one and the same thing to us: in Ukraine there is not a single drop of water that does not belong to the Atlantic basin. This means that with all its arteries and capillaries it is stitched right to Europe.? (Translated by Michael M. Naydan)
He started writing poems in the 1980-ties. His poetry can be described as a blend of post-symbolism, neo-classicism, and post-modernism. In 1980-ties Andrukhovych gave up poetry and concentrated on prose. He has written novels and essays and this made him the most successful writer in the Ukraine. Recently he has come back to poetry but this time to free poetic forms ? verse libre and poetry in prose. His latest book ?Dvanadtsiat´ obrutchiv? (?The Twelve Rings?) has been published in 2003 and is his most personal novel. He also tries experimenting with other means of expression. Together with Mikolaj Trzaska he has created the project ?Andruchoid? where his poems are musically illustrated by outstanding yass musicians Mikolaj Trzaska, Wojciech Mazolewski and Macio Moretti.
Born on 13 March 1960 in IvanoFrankivsk, Ukraine, Yuri Andrukhovych graduated from the Department of Editing at the Ukrainian Institute of Printing, where he studied journalism. He began to publish his poetry in 1982. In 1985 together with Viktor Neborak and Oleksandr Irvaniets he founded BuBaBu (BurlesqueBlusterBuffonery) ? the poetical group which proposed a new poetical quality dominated by literary game, carnivalism, urbanism, and total aesthetical freedom. From 1989 until 1991, Yuri Andrukhovych studied at the Maxim Gorky Literary Institute in Moscow. He is always on the top of the list of authors from Ukraine to be invited to international festivals and meetings of writers. In November 1998, he was invited by American universities - Harvard, Yale, Columbia, The Pennsylvania State University and La Salle University, to give literary readings. Yuri Andrukhovych has received several awards: Blahovist (1993), the award of the Helen Shcherban-Lapika Foundation (1996), the Novel of the Year Prize from the literary journal Suchasnist (1997), and the Lesia & Petro Kovalev Award (1998). His works have been translated and published in Poland, Canada, the USA, Germany, Hungary, Austria, Russia and Finland.
