Dominik Lejman, a Polish artist has achieved what he planned ? he gave painting a new life, broadened its frontiers and made it adequate to the time we live in. He managed to enrich traditional forms with modern techniques creating a new homogeneous genre.
Many critics stress the role of Lejman?s novel techniques. From 1998 he has been joining acrylic paintings with video performances. The spectators have the opportunity to see how moving video images sink into the structure of abstract canvas ? they are not only passive background for the projections, but these two forms seem to fuse into the new art genre ? a new kind of presence. Nevertheless, Lejman himself claims that he prefers to talk about the content of work instead of broadening art?s frontiers. ?In art the workshop should stay transparent for the spectators?, says the artist.
To fulfill his scope of vision, Dominik Lejman has also started working on video frescos and big scale photo wallpapers that he used in one of his most spectacular projects, ?dompracadom? (?houseworkhouse?). Trompe?oeil, enlarged photos taken in a public space of the McCann Erickson agency office in Warsaw and in a private house were permanently installed in the same places in 2001, creating a monumental trompe?oeil. ?Modern houses and offices seem to infiltrate themselves, become homogeneous so the project?s aim was to initiate a discussion about the identity of ?transitonal spaces?, says Lejman.
?The Floor? and ?The Hospital as the Landscape for little discoveries? projects illustrate one of the most important features of Lejman?s vision of art ? the dialogue. In his multilayer works not only different forms exchange their meanings - the spectators cannot stay passive either. In ?The Floor? Lejman painted enlarged image of the floor from Piero della Francesca?s ?The Whipping of Christ? masterpiece on a gallery?s wall. Looking like an op-art work, the fresco became a stage on which spectators? delayed images were projected. Placed in the space of artist?s work, they automatically became an integral part of it. Lejman?s techniques are not only visually seductive, but mainly they allow spectators to step into the created situation.
A sight-specific project:?Hospital as the Landscape for the Little Discoveries? was installed in children?s hospitals in Warsaw, Bialystok and New York (as ?Animating Spaces?). Moving video frescos with images of animals on hospitals? walls initiate healing dialogue between little patients and representation in visual art.
One of Lejman?s most recent works Dela(yer)ing Facade?, a joint installation project with Jacek Dominiczak was shown in the Polish Pavilion:?Architectures: meta-structures of humanity, morphic strategies of exposure? on Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2004.
In June 2005 Lejman realized his biggest video mural - ?Breathing Cathedral? in St John?s church within the Midsummer Eve Celebration. The main nave of the church in Gdansk was transformed into a living organism by animating the gothic structure of the ceiling. The project aimed to unite gathered spectators with this sacral architecture by the homogenous rythm of breath.
