The Senegalese photographer Mama Casset (1908 - 1992) began an apprenticeship with the French photographer Oscar Lataque at the age of twelve. During the war Casset joined the French air force; several of his photo reports originated during this period. After 1945 he set up a studio in Dakar and worked as a studio photographer until going blind in the early eighties. At this time his studio burned down as well, destroying almost all his archival material.
