Kestutis Andrasiunas was born in 1973 in Lithuania. He studied philosophy at Vilnius University from 1991-93 and sculpture at Vilnius Academy of Art, 1993-99. He works in media arts and created Institutio Media, which he co-founded with Mindaugas Gapsevicius in 1998. He lives and works in Vilnius.

Institutio Media (o-o) is an internet project, a virtual platform located in Vilnius. Designed as an attempt to transfer the structure of an institution to the Internet and study its functioning, o-o includes a mailing list, web magazine, internet radio and TV. Andrasiunas and his collaborators focus on developing content rather than organisational structure and have built up an elaborate flexible web space for projects and interaction.

Kestutis Andrasiunas works in media arts, creating digital art works, programming art, making multi-media installations, using the internet and web-casting. He uses a range of media and mechanisms to explore the potential for interactivity with technology.

An example of his work is the ‘Cash Register Generating Poetry’, created in 1999. He used an ordinary cash machine with a poetry generating programme which he wrote. The programme is based on a random selection of words, creating an illusion of conscious, meaningful text. This mode of creating texts resembles the Dadaist and Surrealist experiments with automatic writing, articulating the axis where human intervention and chance collide. The language can be adjusted to Lithuanian, Finnish or English. Viewers can create their own poetry by pressing the cash register buttons and take away the poem printed on a till receipt. The Cash Register was exhibited in London at Milch Gallery, as part of the ‘Central Station’ exhibition in 2000.

Andrasiunas created ‘inside-outside’, a project for the German pavilion at the Hanover Expo 2000. He has also exhibited in Lithuania and Helsinki and was awarded a scholarship for an electronic art project in Berlin at TFH Wildau in 2001.
