Heroes of Style Mixing

Their first foray into punk happened in the late 1980´s, just as Andi and Hannes turned nine and twelve. "Totalschaden," the name of the ambitious young punk duo, was likely a tribute to the Einstürzende Neubauten. At an early age, they parted musical ways with their father who played professional saxophone and ran a jazz club in Regensburg. Soon the brothers played in diverse bands and worked as DJs in clubs spinning techno beats. In 1997, together with guitarist Martin Haygis, Wolfgang Reutter and Klaus Kiesenwetter, they co-founded Beige GT,” the first German indie-rock boy band” (SPEX) and mixed minimal techno with rock sounds - Andi on drums, Hannes on classic Moog synthesizer. In 1999, the two founded the record label “Festplatten”. From then on it was full speed ahead: Beige GT scored a coup with critics for the indie rock "Heads of Agreement" and they won the "Get a Record Deal" contest which was jointly sponsored by the label L´Age D´Or and the music magazine SPEX 2001. This came as no surprise, given their success at nearly everything having to do with experimental. Their carefree impulsive mix of styles set them ahead of their time.
The same goes for their first album, "Jukebox Heroes," which was released only four months later and was likely an homage to the Foreigner songs of the early 80s. The song, "She is Cool Now," with its vocal harmonies, is reminiscent of the early Beatles—electro-style, of course. The unbridled joy that the quintet exudes resonated outwards. The anarchic creativity, which unabashedly drew from a mixed bag of styles, was not unlike the famous Four. After all, their music was a joint effort, “in every way: both musically - in the studio and live – and away from music,” said Beige GT. They don’t want to keep imitating themselves, rather they are "song-oriented": a piece, a character, a meaning. This is one way of explaining the happy and free-spirited title sequence of "Jukebox Heroes". "Wake up in the Dishes" plays off "Funghi poodle" and "Married in Rio. Just reading the lyrics cheers you up. "Funghi poodle" grooves soulfully and VIVA2 plays video back and forth. Simultaneously, their cover version of the underground hit, "Knights of the Jaguar,” by DJ Rolando made it to the New Musical Express Charts (NME) Single of the Week in the UK. And those who’ve seen the second version of "The Edukators," and heard the soundtrack, will recognize the refreshing song during the end credits.

Beige GT cleverly released their next song, "Heat," even before the release of their second album. "Heat," an unchecked swirl of schrammel guitars and Moog electro-sounds, hit movie theaters as the soundtrack to an AOK commercial. And then "Heat" took off. From April 2004, Beige GT became the German handball team’s official supplier at the Olympics. "Heat" was released as a single and as a music video: "The song is fast, direct and straight on ... Maybe our taking it to the limit-piece is giving the boys an extra boost," said Wolfgang Reuter, guitarist and singer of the band. Reuter outted Beige GT as sports obsessed. And Andi Teichmann displayed their playful sporting spirit: "The Olympic spirit is very important to us as is the team. Gold this, gold that - being there is what matters most."

The album “Cue”, which followed on the heels of "Heat’s" PR orgy, was produced by Swen Meyer and once again thrilled the German indie rock world. Music critics rejoiced. SPEX branded them the "newest evolution in German Indie Rock,” Intro wrote: "Rarely has Indie Pop been this danceable”. "Cue" has an even broader range. This time the boys are giving their voices all they’ve got. "Amber" sounds at times spacey, like a song by Pink Floyd, the second single "Cue" is angry, punk-like and hurts. The pauses, according to the band, are just there so they can, "go full-throttle all over again." The album is "Power-Indie-Pop," as a fan noted, "recommended to slalom racers, hockey fans and 4-man bobsledders.” Everything is analog taken to the limit.

The Teichmann’s go full-throttle elsewhere too. They launched the Kunstverein Graz e.V. and set up a studio there. The "Gebrüder Teichmann" are DJs, producers, re-mixers, composers, and whirl through countless projects. They are working on "Teichmann Hurt" and mix electronica, new music and Alpen- Dub. They are collaborating with the composer Moritz Eggert for the Tiroler Festspiel and Andi Teichmann, the drummer, is guitarist for the Indie-Noise-Pop-Band "The Happy End". He released his first solo album, "Fades," in late 2005; in 2007, the brothers released “The Number Of The Beat ", which in 2008, was the opening act for the British electronic duo Underworld in Munich and Berlin.

They also toured Europe, Russia, Africa, Asia and South America with Beige GT. And of course, the creative hot heads keep on mixing. Since autumn 2009, the Teichmanns have been rehearsing with East African musicians in Nairobi. Meeting point, studio and lodging: The project studio, soon dubbed the “Madhouse”, turns into a round-the-clock idea factory. The BLNRB NRBLN-project, initiated by the Goethe-Institut Nairobi, involves 21 musicians from Kenya alone and many electronica bands from Berlin. What’s going to happen on stage –can only be surmised. BLBRB-NRBLN "has club music from the two major cities: Berlin and Nairobi colliding into each other," according to Groove magazine. What’s the ultimate appeal of the musical collaboration for him? Andi Teichmann is clear about this: the common denominator is missing. The stage is free for openness and curiosity: "The Kenyan artists are influenced musically by Dancehall, Reggae, Benge and hip-hop. They grew up with artists we have never even heard of."

Participants include the Dancehall duo Modeselektor, the multinational trio Jahcoozi, the hip-hop collective Ukoo Flani from the slums of Mombasa and Nairobi, the Kenyan house music of Just a Band, Michel Ongaro, Mr. Abbas & Necessary Noise and Radi, both from Kenya. It will surely collide breathlessly, unbridled youth and enjoyably experiment.
