Schawki Youssef was born in Aidamun in Lebanon in 1973. He is part of the generation of active young Lebanese artists who have grown up during a time of conflict with a strong sense of humanist concern. As an artist, Youssef questions the process and meaning of making art and seeks a critical distance in order to assess his work and motives. He states that his work ´deals with the tension/paradox between a "primitive intuition" and the need to theorise/politicise on this mental order.´

Following his studies at the Lebanese University Fine Arts Institute from 1990-94, Youssef was awarded a two month scholarship at INJEP in Paris. He currently lives and works in Beirut.

Youssef has worked as an illustrator for the Mediterranean Advertising Agency. He then worked as an art teacher, first at the International Institute in Jounieh, Lebanon, 1997-98, then at the American Community School in Beirut, 1999-2001.

The artist works in a range of media: drawing, painting, fibreglass, installations and performance. He has exhibited in various galleries in Lebanon since 1998.

Schawki Youssef was shortlisted for the Visiting Arts/Delfina Annual Fellowship in 2001 on the nomination of George Arbid, Professor of Architecture at the Academie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts in Beirut.
