Malaysian media infrastructure

Indrajit Banerjee is a communication specialist, with a substantial insight into communication infrastructures especially in Malasia, but also in other Asian coutries.
Indrajit Banerjee´s fields of Specialization include: Information and Communication Technology Policy and Social Implications, Media Globalization and Cultural Identity, Television Studies. Furthermore he is specialised in the use of media technology for education, and how media can strengthen democracy.

Indrajit Banerjee is author of several articles and books on the internet and democracy in Asia. Presently he is actively engaged in several research projects:

Indrajit Banerjee is the overall research coordinator for a research project, on ´Promoting Information and Communication Technologies for Human Development in Asia´. The project attempts to assess and evaluate the impact of information and communication technologies on human development in Asia. Essentially, this study aims to review and assess progress made by countries in the Asian region, in drafting and implementing their national e-policies and -strategies for harnessing the potential of ICTs for reducing poverty and enhancing human development. It will identify gaps and constraints to implementation of ICT strategies, document best practices, and in general provide a practical knowledge-sharing instrument for encouraging and facilitating greater South-South and North-South cooperation for ICT for Development. This is also the first research project in Asia that uses the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) as a benchmark for assessing the ICT initiatives and successes of Asian countries. The countries that will be covered by the project will be based on a mix of their Technology Achievement Index, including leaders, potential leaders, dynamic adopters and marginalized countries. Nine countries have been selected for this extensive research projec: China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mongolia, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. The project is funded and coordinated by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (APDIP).

Another research area is ´Media Moguls and Empires: Media Concentration and Ownership in Asia´. This research project aims to provide a detailed and extensive critical analysis of the concentration of media ownership and consolidation in several Asian countries. Essentially, the research undertaken within the scope of this project will consist of a detailed examination of some of the key media moguls and empires in Asia. Attention will be focused on the strategies of vertical integration, expansion and consolidation of these key media corporations. The project is being funded by the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung.

A third research project is: ´National Information Infrastructure Initiatives: Strategies and Deployment in China and India´. The project is funded by the Small Grants Scheme, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore.

A fourth research project is: ´Internet and Democracy in Asia´ Research grant awarded by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, research undertaken in collaboration with the Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC), Singapore.

Besides his academic work, he has been a consultant for UNDP - implementing and evaluating ICT -strategies.

1998-2000: ´An Analysis of Malaysia´s Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) Information Infrastructure Initiative´, Funded by the IRPA Short-term Research Grant, University Science Malaysia, Penang, Malaysia.

The major focus of this project was to study the changing policy context in Malaysia´s IT sector and to see to what extent the MSC will provide the country with a suitable infrastructure in line with its development goals and context.

1995-1996: "The evolution of policy frameworks in the European Union and Canada in the field of broadcasting and telecommunications in the context of convergence and the creation of Information Superhighways". Funded by the Research Group on Cultural Industries and Social Informatization, Montreal, Canada.
This research project examined the changes in policy frameworks in the European Union and Canada in the field of broadcasting and telecommunications. This study focused on the implications of information technology on the existing policy environments.

1994-1995: "Media, Sports and Money - Their Dynamic Relationships and Implications", Sorbonne University, France.
Summary of Research Project - With the advent of television and other mass media, the entire sporting world has been transformed. Sponsorships of sporting events have become a major driving force of sports today and this research project studied the intricate relationships between media, sports and money.

1993-1994: "The Use and Integration of Media Technology in Education", Funded by CLEMI, Ministry of Education, France.
Summary of Research Project : Media are being increasingly used in education. Our research project assessed the effective use of media technology in the process of education.

Besides his academic work, Indrajit Banerjee has worked as a consultant for UNDP - implementing and evaluating ICT -strategies.
