Gulzar (Samporan Singh) (born 1936), Hindi–Urdu director and writer, was associated with the Indian People’s Theatre Association (IPTA) as a poet. As film lyricist and script-writer, he worked with Bimal Roy, Hirishikesh Mukherjee, Asit Sen, Basu Chatterjee, Buddhadev Dasgupta and Kumar Shahani, among others. The films he directed include Mere Apne (1971), a remake of Tapan Sinha’s Apanjan (1968), and several derived from Bengali literary material: Khushboo (1975) from Saratchandra Chatterjee, Kitaab (1977) and Namkeen (1982) from Samaresh Basu. Gulzar has published three anthologies of poetry and several books for children. His better known films include Aandhi (1975), avowedly modelled on the life and career of Indira Gandhi; Koshish (1972), about a deaf couple; and Maachis (1994), on the experience of state terror in Punjab.
