Statement of the artist for the «Postcard Project» of the House of World Cultures "How can one find appropriate balance between art, cultural living and natural life in a mixed line of humanbeing?" Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, 2007 Born in 1957 in Trad, Thailand, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook is thought by many to be Thailand´s most notable visual artist. Her works are about the relationship between cultural pressures on the one hand and the yearning for individuality and personal experience on the other, as well as about the reflection of this relationship by society. They are also about the loneliness of dying. Many of them focus on women and their roles, identities and experiences, and they appear in various media like video installations, watercolours, photographs, texts, prints and sculptures. Rasdjarmrearnsook has two art diplomas. In 1986 she rounded off her studies of graphics at Sipakorn University in Bangkok with a B.F.A. then in 1990 she was awarded a diploma in the visual arts in Braunschweig, Germany. She was sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation as well as being a master student at the College of Visual Arts. Since the 1990s her works have appeared in group and solo exhibitions, as in the National Gallery in Bangkok and in galleries in Japan, Korea, Poland, Taiwan, Germany, South Africa, the USA, Sweden and Slovenia. They have also appeared in big international art exhibitions like the first Asia-Pacific Triennial in Brisbane, Australia, at the Sydney Biennial in 1996 and at the Biennial in Johannesburg in 1995. In 2006 Rasdjarnrearnsook took part in the 51st Venice Biennial. She is one of the few artists in Thailand whose works have been shown internationally. She has won various awards like the gold and silver medals in the field of graphics at the 26th, 28th, 30th, 31st and 33rd National Exhibition of Arts in Bangkok. She also won prizes at the Contemporary Art Competition in Bangkok in 1980, 1987 and 1990.
