ARTIST STATEMENT/ POSTCARD PROJECT OF THE HOUSE OF WORLD CULTURES 2007 ´What is writing, is it life, is it the life or is it the life the writer is writing. How is it, when the writer does not get recognition or success - how will be his life, how will it look like? How he can stand to himself and make his life nice - with or without success.´ Miral Al-Tahawi is one of Egypt’s most successful young writers. Born in 1968 in Sharqiya in Egypt, she grew up in a Bedouin family. She studied literature and is presently working as a lecturer at Cairo University. Her first collection of stories “Riem al-barari al-mostahila” (“The Exceptional Steppe Antelope”) appeared in 1995. This was followed by two novels "Al-Chiba" (in English as “The Tent”) and “Al-Badhingana” (“The Blue Aubergine”). For the latter she received a state literature award, the first woman in Egypt to do so. Both of these novels were soon translated and available in a number of languages. In 2002 her third novel was published in Cairo, “Naquarat al-zibaë” (“The Gazelle’s Walk”), and was awarded the Cairo Book Fair Prize in spring 2002. All three of her novels deal with her experience of life, depicting the existential problems of a young woman in a male-dominated world. At present, Miral Al-Tahawi is writing her doctoral thesis on “The Desert Novel in the Arabian World.”
