Dmytro Bogomazov

Striking visual images on a pedestal of classic humanistic literature

A major profile in contemporary Ukrainian Theatre, director Dmytro Bogomazov points in new directions.
Ukrainian director Dmytro Bogomazov made his directorial debut in 1993 with a prize winning production of Kariy’s classic Ukrainian play I. Karpenko. He went on to direct numerous productions at The Kiev State Theatre for Drama and Comedy where he served as artistic director until 2000. In 2001 Bogomazov became the artistic director of Kiev´s newly opened municipal theatre, the Vilna Scena, The Open Stage, where he is active today.
Dmytro Bogomozov’s work is strongly visual. Stylized costuming, projections, effectual lighting, non representational set design; a Bogomazov production is about as far as you can get from naturalism. An able navigator in the world of classical literature, Bogomazov is best known for productions of classical plays, his original interpretations giving them new relevance. His Midsummer Night’s Dream (2003) has court scenes played in kimonos in front of a projection of Mount Fuji, Othello (2004) dress actors in padded body suits. They resemble Sumo wrestlers moving on an undulating landscape as the moon rises behind them.
Bogomazov freely adapts literary works for the stage, texts of Thomas Mann is his 1999 The Deceived One, and Faust – Fragment, also from 1999 with a Playboy Rabbit as Mephisto. In Morphia, 2002 he explores texts of Bulgakov and Kandinsky through visual images taken from a horror movie hospital ward. Some Wine (2005) stages the non dramatic writings of Luigi Pirandello in a film noir style reminiscent of detective films of the forties and fifties.
Bogozamov has earned the support of several foreign institutions in Ukraine. With the support of Pro Helvetica and The Goethe Institute he established “Faust-Model”, a program for investigating the possibilities of incorporating dance, performance and visual arts into Ukrainian theatre. In 2004 he collaborated with The French Institute in the Ukraine to produce a production of Koltes play, Roberto Zucco. Italian fugitive and felon Zucco, in his black prison overall, moves through a pea green world among pea green policemen, pimps and prostitutes in Bogomazov’s celebrated production.
