Rural crafts from West Bengal

Biswajit Chakraborty was born in 1966 and lives and works in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. He has worked freelance with the Crafts Council of West Bengal since 1984 as a field worker, promoting rural craftspeople. As an artist, he is assistant sculptor to Nemai Chandra Paul, helping the master sculptor make large scale sculptural images of Hindu gods and goddesses on public projects abroad.
Biswajit Chakraborty was born in 1966. He lives and works in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. Since 1984 he has worked freelance with the Crafts Council of West Bengal as a field worker, promoting rural craftspeople.

He is a skilled potter and works as assistant to the master sculptor Nemai Chandra Paul. In 1995 he helped Nemai Chandra create a 12ft image of the Goddess Durga in Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, Massachusetts, USA. In 2002 he travelled to Edinburgh, UK for the project ´Making a Durga´ at the Royal Museum. These education and public art workshops have proved highly popular with a wide public, engaging both adults and children.

He has travelled widely and participated in a conference in 1997 in Philadelphia, USA where traditional Bengali artisans created a Bonga village. He worked on other demonstration and education projects at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

In 2001 he participated in the Kala Ghoda Festival of arts in Mumbai where he performed with animal puppeteers.
