Sculpting design

Born in Canton in 1974, Jing Lin graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing in mural and oil painting in 1997. She then went abroad to study at the Academie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Belgium, choosing to specialise in sculpture, which now feeds in to her current designs. ´My design work focuses mainly on materials and the geometrical and optical variation of lines and textures´ she says. ´Most of my products have a sculptural substance. It´s fundamental how they feel when you touch them or how their shape or colour or grain varies as you change your point of view or the position of the object whether on a table or in a room.´ Returning to China after her training in Belgium, Lin set up a small design studio in a disused munitions factory in Beijing, where she began designing furniture, ceramics, household objects and accessories. Despite this varied repertoire, the artist stresses the continuity than runs through all of her work: ´There are conceptual and visual relations among different designs I make, no matter if they are porcelain tableware or pieces of furniture or large screens or cushions and bags.´ Her artistic vision, however, never compromises the accessibility of her works, as she insists that ´forms must be as simple and natural as possible and the objects beautiful, creative, functional and user-friendly´.
