The Objects Interior

Danuta Haremska`s objects and pictures present us with rooms and receptacles that appear to be closed. These works give the impression they are concealing secrets, keeping them safe from the eyes of any observer. But what is it the objects wish to hide and protect? The answer to this question cannot be found without effort on the part of the viewer who has to break open the chambers in order to reach their hidden secrets. That is the challenge of these objects to us.
Haremska explains: “ It is not the objects` exterior that interests me most; their appearance is the result of my work with a range of emotions and concepts. With ideas like to protect, preserve, safeguard, conceal, shield, hold secret, and so on.” Titles such as Reflection, Reminiscences, Existential Experiences bear this out. For they allude not to objects’ physical form but to thought processes. If we try to find references to Haremska’s forms in reality, we quicly discover that their relationship with reality is not direct; they merely evoke reality. They are products of the artist’s imagination and were created in her thoughts. Since the objects’ physical form is not, then, what Haremska’s art is about, her works should be considered as tools that help us visualize concepts. It would seem that Haremska wishes to direct the onlooker’s attention away from the objects’ own visual aspects and towards the process of reflection from which they stemmed. Given this emphasis of the reflective process and playing down of the objects’ formal aspect, it becomes quite natural to view Danuta Haremska’s art in terms of conceptual art.

Haremska does not consider each object to be independent; she sees them rather as constituents of larger entity. It is important for her that the objects jointly possess the gallery space, and give an integrated impression. Entering Haremska’s white cube of an exhibition space is like entering a meditation room in which all the elements evince the room’s purpose. The spectator is introduced to a world cut off from everyday reality, one where there is the calm needed for reflection, reflection within the framework of art. In fact Danuta Haremska says that her objects are intended to extricate the onlooker from the everyday bustle that leaves so little time for contemplation.

Danuta Haremska is a visual artist that chooses to work both two dimensionally (drawings, paintings) and three dimensionally (sculpture, object and installations).
Danuta Haremska´s educational background comes from Poland, from the The Art Liceum and Academy of Fine Arts in Poznan. She has been living and exhibiting in Norway since the early 80s. Her two last solo exhibitions have been at Tegnerforbundet Galleri and Galleri III in Oslo. She currently prepares for a solo exhibition at the Galleri Arsenal in Poznan, Poland.
