Thai political artist

The Thai artist, Chumpon, is a culture personality, actively engaged in art and politics. Apisuk Chumpok has continuously been promoting performance art in Thailand since 80s and is one of a welknown performance artists in Asia. Since 1996, he has performed in Germany, England, Quebec, Japan, Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore, Switzerland, Australia and USA.
The artist Chumpon is teaching and promoting art in Thailand and besides he is actively engaged in social and health politics.

He is known for his activism in AIDS and Human Rights works, he is also working with EMPOWER Foundation, which was founded by his partner Chantawipa Apisuk, an organisation advocates for the rights of sex workers in Thailand.

He founded Concrete House in 1993, an art and community space, the only performance art venue in Thailand, well known for its unique character. He is also a founder and director of "Asiatopia" -an International Performance Art Festival in Thailand.

His audio installation work "ALIVE" - a conversation with a friend living with HIV", was selected for exhibition at Sydney Biennial in 1998, and was invited to speak at Asia & pacific Triennial in Brisbane. His recent writing about contemporary art movement in Thailand "Politic of Art in Thailand", is published in "Art Action, 1958-1998"; by Inter/editor, Quebec.

His performance work is an assemblage of eventful interaction with the audience led by political and conflicts of ideal world and reality, juxtaposition of live video and images projection. His work is full of activities, energetic interaction and humorous.

Bio

1948: Chumpon was born on 7 November in Nan, a northern province in Thailand.

Studied Art At Changsilpa School, Silapakorn University / Bangkok and at the Museum School of Fine Arts / Boston, Massachusette, USA.

1968-70: He studied with Tang Chang a famous Thai contemporary poet/painter.

He is presently teaching ?Art and Community? at Thammasat University?s Graduate Program on Cultural Management and Innovative Studies.
