‘The language of Inga’s paintings relates to her essential insight into the truthfulness of our perception.’ (Maria Traumane)
Latvian painter, Inga Bruvere was born in Riga in 1963. She studied at the Latvian Academy of Art (Department of Monumental Painting) from 1985 to 1991 and received an MA in 2003. She lives and works in Riga.
A painter who often works on a large scale, Bruvere is interested in signs, illusions, trompe l’oeil effects and playing with reality. Critic Mara Traumane explores this theme in a recent catalogue article. ‘Illusion is a long-term concern of the painter Inga Bruvere. The transposition of reality impressions, spatial forms and the passage of time to the surface of canvas and colours can be associated with a sort of alchemy that transforms the nature of everyday phenomena. The varied language of contemporary painting seems especially suitable for the study of illusions.’
Inga Bruvere has exhibited extensively in the Baltic States with several solo exhibitions in Latvia and Lithuania since 1995 and a solo exhibition at Stadthausgalerie Muenster in Germany. Her work has been included in a large number of group exhibitions in Latvia, as well as a group show in the USA. She has been a regular participant at international painting symposia in Latvia and Lithuania. In 1996-97 she worked at the Cité Internationale des Arts studios in Paris and has also attended a symposium for young artists in Europe in Sweden.
In 2002 she was invited to participate in the Braziers International Artists Workshop at Braziers Park in Oxfordshire, England. Here she worked outside the studio and made a temporary environmental work ‘Tea Time’, placing 30 painted tea cups on the surface of a pond.
Critic Anita Vanaga describes the work: ‘Inga Bruvere sees the situation of timelessness in the architecture of an Oxfordshire garden with standing water … Plants which enjoy the green tranquillity of still water form a dense, opaque layer, seeming stability, sense of security – time has condensed into matter. One can step into standing water as many times as one likes. And mirror oneself inwards. The painter emphasises this situation by the use of tea cups that are painted in the opposite colour of the water surface and evoke associations with the flowering of water lilies. … The creative time of ‘Tea Time’ is timelessness. The creative time becomes so intense and dense that one feels no time any more. Time is cancelled. Time does not exist.’
Other paintings incorporate constructed images, often with text, using grid-like structures and coloured blocks to create kaleidoscope pictures. These canvases, with acrylics and coloured pencil, display a rigorous attention to space, colour sequencing and interplay of opposite forms and colours and aim to tease the viewer’s perceptions of illusion and reality.
