Painting with the camera
In 1993 the Moroccan Mounir Fatmi declared his death as a painter and has since worked with a video- and still-camera in installations and performances on the theme of impossible communication.
Born in Tangiers in 1970, Mounir Fatmi is a multi-media artist who paints, photographs, performs and makes videos and installations. In provocative actions he questions the conditions of art in a society antagonistic towards it. In 1993 he declared himself dead as a painter and destroyed his paintings, whose images now linger only in the memories of those who witnessed the devastation. Since then he has painted only with cameras. He is preoccupied with communication and its impossibility.
His video-art has won various awards, like at the d´Art Vidéo festival in Casablanca and at other international festivals.
