Appointed National Specialist of Popular Visual Arts and Crafts in 1984, she organised national fairs and seminars in Cuba and spoke at international conferences on Cuban Popular Art. Ceramicist and sculptor Grisell Rivera Hernandez was born in Cuba and lives and works in Havana. She studied sculpture at the Superior Institute of Art in Havana. After a period as a provincial specialist of Popular Visual Arts and Crafts, she was appointed as a national specialist in 1984. Over the next fourteen years she organised many national seminars, workshops and fairs in various craft fields in Cuba. This work also took her abroad as a lecturer at international conferences and other events in Russia, Germany, Poland and Mexico, speaking on subjects such as Cuban Popular Art.

Since 1988 she has been an independent artist, developing her own ceramic work which ranges from individual, domestic scale pieces to large scale murals and ceramic groups designed as public art pieces. Her individual pieces include original thrown and constructed forms which take on a robust personality of their own. They are painted with strong colour, texture and imagery.

Rivera Hernandez has exhibited extensively in Cuba and has also shown in the USA. She was invited with a group of Cuban artists to exhibit and run workshops in the Forest of Dean, England in 2002, showing work at Gloucester Cathedral and other venues in the region.

Grisell Rivera Hernandez has made a large number of public commissions in Havana between 1991 and 2002. These include ceramic murals up to 11 x 18 metres size and a number of ceramic groups. Work has been commissioned for hotels, banks, a commercial centre, University of Havana and private sites.
