Theatre for survival
Founded by Edward Muallem and Iman Aoun in Palestine in 1991, Ashtar focuses on three things: ´forum theatre´, the training of teachers and children, and the field ´experimental drama´.
Since 1991, the Ashtar-founders Edward Muallem and Iman Aoun have been trying to establish a living theatre-scene in Palestine and have focussed on three things: Firstly, their forum theatre, which is based on Augusto Boal´s ´theatre of the repressed´, brings out a new episode of ´Abu Shaker´s Affairs´ once a year and involves the Palestinian on the street. Secondly, pupils and teachers are educated through children´s drama, workshops and school programs. And thirdly, Ashtar brings out a new experimental work once a year, too. The latest Ashtar productions have been ´Land and Sky´, a piece about environmental care for children, and ´Of Soil and Sand´, a reworking of the myths of Canaan in a co-production with Mir_at Media from Jordan and El Teatro from Tunisia. Since the start of the new agsa intifada in September, 2000, Ashtar has been trying, with an emergency program, to carry on touring Palestine, be it with less freedom of travel.
