Art in Motion

Venelin Shurelov named his first artistic collective after the migration of birds: Via Pontica. From that initiative emerge numerous artworks, which despite their diversity in form of expression, share the ideas of motion and of the path of body and spirit.
Originally, Via Pontica was the name of a plastic arts simposium in Iasna Poliana - a village situated a few kilometers from the Bulgarian Black Sea. The simposium gathered artists from various disciplines and countries annually, starting in 1998. Shurelov was part of the organisation team, and adopted the simposium´s style and practice - working oudoors, amid nature, using natural materials found on the spot.
These features were transfered to the art group Via Pontica he founded in 2002 with colleagues from the simposium. The group consisted of members from Serbia, Japan, and Bulgaria, and their joint skills encompassed woodcraft, photography, installation, art theory, music, set design, puppet theatre set design, graphics and painting. Throughout two years the group produced a number of projects, reflecting on different aspects of the human being as a being in motion, a being learning to walk, and how motion affects humans´ behaviour and nature.
In 2004 Via Pontica group transformed into Subhuman Theatre, which engaged Venelin Shurelov, Ana Vilenica - art theorist and performer, and the animator Animitar Animitrov. Resting on the artistic baggage of Via Pontica, Subhuman Theatre extended their artistic search to human fragility, to the "subtle" in human nature. This time the artists explored the path of perceptions inwards, towards an inner landscape.
Shurelov has also produced his own projects, such as the Drawing Machine, or participated in other team works, such as theatre performances, as set designer.
Shurelov´s artworks may reside in an art gallery, on the street, or the facade of a building. They connect to an external theme as motion or immobility, man and contruction, but they are driven by the artist´s experiences and motives to live and follow a particular path. Searching his inner landscape for impulses and inspirations which stir routine and mundane existence, the artist reaches out to his audience.
Venelin Shurelov is part of the DATES phase of the project Black/North SEAS.

Via Ludens

Exhibition / Installation,
2005
A project which humanises a buiding´s facade. The artist reflects on the surface of buildings as a man´s "third skin" (Hundertwasser). While urban architecture is typically monotonous and unfitting for man´s body, the artist re-invents an existing facade as a way to break the boring balance of walls. Simplified human figures placed on the facade are animated by human initiative or by the wind via simple mechanisms. Thus they let the pores of man´s third skin breath and allow for communication and interaction. Presented on the facade of Theatre-Laboratory "Sfumato" Sofia, building of former baths.
