ARTIST STATEMENT/ POSTCARD PROJECT OF THE HOUSE OF WORLD CULTURES 2007
´WHAT ARE YOU AFRAID OF?´
Rose Issa is an independent curator, producer and writer specialised in the visual arts and films from the Middle East and North Africa. For the last 20 years she has been curating film festivals and exhibitions on contemporary arts from the Arab world and Iran in collaboration with private and public institutions, such as the Barbican Art Centre, the Leighton House Museum, the Brunei Gallery (SOAS), the National Film Theatre and British Film Institute (LFF & BFI), the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in London; the CCCB (Contemporary Cultural Centre) in Barcelona, Spain; Foundation Beyeler, Switzerland; Parc de la Villette, Paris; Asia House, New York; IFA (Institut fur Auslandsbeziehungen), Germany; and the House of World Cultures (HKW) in Berlin. She has advised many institutions such as the British Museum, the Imperial War Museum, the Museum of Mankind, the Victoria and Albert Museum, all in London; the National Museums of Scotland; the Smithsonian Institution (Sackler/Freer Gallery and National Museum of African Arts) in Washington DC; and the National Gallery of Jordan, in their acquisition of contemporary arts from the Middle East. She has been advisor to the London and Rotterdam Film Festivals on Arab and Iranian films for several years and organised many film seasons at the National Film Theatre, the Barbican Film Centre and the ICA in London. She was recently a member of the Jury of National Pavilions at the 50th Biennial of Venice, June 2003.
