Toshimaru Nakamura

Before turning to electronic music, the Tokyo guitarist, composer and sound-designer Toshimaru Nakamura played rock and jazz. In 1998 he laid his guitar aside and since then with the guitarist Tetuzi Akiyama has been organising monthly meetings of musicians keen on electronic music. He is said to have pioneered the onkyo music-scene (jap. onkyo, reverberation of a sound), a movement of structurally oriented Japanese improvisers. He has played at many festivals in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the USA and made many CDs, including four solo albums.
The same year he founded with the American drummer Jason Kahn the duo ´repeat´, as part of which he then toured Japan, Germany, Switzerland and France. On the first CDs bearing this name from 1998, the two musicians are to be heard with their original instruments. In the following years Nakamura shone in playing the no-input mixing-board, which he himself had devised. That same year he joined Sachiko M with her no-sample sampler in making the ´no-no duo´ CD ´un´.

The no-imput mixing board enables Nakamura to produce anonymous sounds from which his own emotions have been filtered. Listeners, though, are welcome to respond emotionally and associatively to the almost delicate sine-waves. Whereas the sound-bubbles of his first solo album ´No-Input Mixing Board´ (Zero Gravity´ recalled science fiction, his second latest solo album ´Vehicle´ (Cubic Music) toys rather with pop structures.

Toshimaru Nakamura has been working since 1996 as a composer and sound-designer for the female choreographer and dancer Kim Ito.
