Hong Kong´s artistic soul
The amazing 15 man City Contemporary Dance Company, CCDC, has become Hong Kong´s most active promoter of modern dance and contemporary culture. CCDC has created over 150 works in its repertoire.
Rich in contradictions, aestetics, energy. Explosive bodies are at stage, when CCDC performs. As the flagship modern dance company in Hong Kong, City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) is renowned for the distinctive and yet diverse style of its programs.
CCDC is a touring company, representing Hong Kong and enlightening audiences world-wide with innovative dance works of highest artistic standard. CCDC is also a charitable performing arts organisation. Through collaboration with innovative artists from other media, CCDC reflects the multifaceted contemporary culture of Hong Kong in its works.
Technically CCDC combines modern, western-style dance techniques with the Chinese tradition. CCDC´s current performance "365 ways of doing and undoing orientalism" is rich in fascinating expressions, powerful metaphors, vital fantasy and beautiful visual effects - symbolising a subtle critical confrontation to the Western myth of Asia.
CCDC has long been committed to dance education and development. Its education and Outreach Department runs a very comprehensive programme. Each year it produces 80 outreach performances, provides dance courses to over 2,000 students, organises 3,000 creative workshops, and devises special programmes to arouse public interest in contemporary arts. CCDC endeavours to rally the best Chinese talents to create dance out of the context of contemporary China.
In the first half of this decade, CCDC has concentrated more on creating a greater awareness of Chinese culture.
As Willy Tsao says: "It dawned upon us that we are not just representing Hong Kong but China as well...We have to take a broader perspective" (South China Morning Post, 31. of March 2002).
In the press CCDC has been described in this way:
"Artistic soul of contemporary Hong Kong"
\South China Morning Post, Hong Kong
"This ensemble, which is a mixture of east and west, is a direct expression of the history of Hong Kong". \Tikvah Hatar-Yishai, reviewer of Karmiel Dance Festival, Israel
